THE SUN FOUNDATION / KIRBY FAMILY
Sunshine Baseball Club wishes to inform you about a change that has taken place regarding the use of the Village Roadshow name around Sunshine Baseball Club and the implementation of a new branding, The Sun Foundation, founded by John and Carolyn Kirby.
Sunshine Baseball Club has been associated with the Village name for many years and this is all due to the connection that we have had with the Kirby family. George Kirby was Sunshine Baseball Club’s first President, and it was a position that he held from 1938, up until his death in 1961. He was the first Chairman of Village Roadshow when it was formed in 1953.
George Kirby had the first picture theatre in Sunshine on Hampshire Road and his son Roc Kirby followed in his footsteps; by building and operating one of Australia’s first drive-in cinemas in the, then, outer Melbourne suburb of Croydon. He founded Village Roadshow in 1953.
The Kirby family have been very supportive of Sunshine Baseball Club over the years and that continues to this day with the son of Roc Kirby, John Kirby, along with his wife Carolyn and daughter Alana.
In 2020, Village Roadshow was sold to BGH Capital and after many years of support from Village Roadshow, the new owners decided not to continue with the support for Sunshine Baseball Club. With this new development, we met with John Kirby, and he indicated that he and his family would continue the support to Sunshine Baseball Club through The Sun Foundation, which is a family foundation that was set up in 2006 to help families and other organisations.
John Kirby indicated that the support for Sunshine Baseball Club from The Sun Foundation will be ongoing for years and years to follow.
Indeed, at a recent meeting with John Kirby he stated “The Kirby family, myself, Carolyn, and Alana, are proud and honoured to continue supporting Sunshine Baseball Club through this generation, and into the next. I always look forward to the Sunshine Baseball Club newsletter when it is published to keep across the Club my family has had such a close relationship with over generations”.
This loyalty and commitment from John, Carolyn and Alana Kirby is just outstanding and we are indebted to them for their ongoing support.
